Interactive Pixels

A series of photos that could be interacted with

Work 1

I firstly shot a set of nine night-view photos of iconic buildings in Shanghai’s bund. It’s like viewing financial district of Manhattan from the Brooklyn Promenade. Then I processed the photos with Image Stack technique on Photoshop, which I used on my early assignment projects. Moreover, I substituted the spotlight pixel dots with “$” and “?” because I think Shanghai is a city with high living cost and people here are money oriented, who could be overwhelmed when living here

Work 2

In this one, I first processed the photo by using the near-IR technique I used on the previous assignment. Then in this photo, the blue sky became green and the green plants turned to dark pinkish. Then I replaced the spotlight pixel dots with the butterfly emoji. Therefore, wherever the mouse cursor is hovering, the area contains a cluster of butterflies.

Work 3

The third one was shot inside Suzhou Museum. I like the lines and different shapes like triangles and parallelograms in the photo. In this one, I tried to replace the spotlight pixels dots with a Chinese character “福”, which means happiness and luck, and is usually being put on the doors or walls as decoration. The character has an emerging effect. I really like the outcome when I put the cursor on the white wall in this photo.

Work 4

In this one, I made the color of the background pixels to be aqua (0, 255, 255). And by changing the combination of the pixel brightness and flow speed parameters, an effect of swirling appears in the photo if you look closely enough. The background pixels also create an effect of dripping because the pixel dots are flowing from top to bottom.

Work 5

I shot a photo of Dumbo during last winter break before the outbreak of pandemic. The photo was shot on a snowy day. I chose this one because the overexposed snowflakes are visible in this photo. Usually the small snowflakes are too trivial to be noticeable. Since it’s snowing in the photo, I made the pixels in the spotlight cluster become snowflakes as well by replacing the pixel dots with “+” sign.
